First Saturdays at Brooklyn Museum of Art

by

Brooklyn-Museum-FrontManhattan is one of the art capitals of the world but on the first Saturday of every month, Brooklyn becomes the most popular destination for art and culture.

The Brooklyn Museum is host to thousands of visitors who flock to Brooklyn to experience an evening of free art and entertainment. Throughout the month the museum has a great selection of world class modern and classical art exhibits but after 5 p.m. on First Saturdays, the Museum is a smorgasbord of entertainment until 11 p.m. This June 2, the First Saturday will celebrate the beginning of summer with a night of music, dancing, games, contests, and food at the Best of Brooklyn Block Party.

First Saturdays are especially great for families with teens because there is a load of cultural things to do for the brain like films, lectures and art exhibits but at 8 p.m. there is a dance party featuring notable New York D.J.’s until 10 p.m.  This is a great way for teens to feel like they are experiencing the NYC nightlife but in the safety of a large cultural institution and, well, with their parents.

For sustenance, the Museum ‘s café serves a wide selection of sandwiches, salads, and beverages, and a cash bar offers wine and beer (with ID). There are also many decent restaurants a short walk away on 5th Avenue if you want a proper meal. The best way to get there is the 2 or 3 subway to Eastern Parkway, which lands you directly in front of the Museum.  Or you can drive, parking is a flat rate of $4 starting at 5 p.m.
