Family-Friendly Harvest and Autumn Getaways

by

HARVEST2TMOMKids may think that fall is all about Halloween but it’s also a great time to pick apples and pears, press cider and visit farms to see where produce actually grows.  While on a fall getaway, consider carving out time to visit a college town where your family can catch a football game and tour a campus (it’s never too early for college talk).  And if you’re traveling over the Thanksgiving holiday, why not plan to meet with extended family and make the fall getaway a reunion? Following are a few harvest and fall getaway destinations from Traveling Mom.
If your kids are young, you may not think about visiting a college campus. But many campuses have football teams, botanical gardens, marine labs and other fun things for kids to see. California has several kid-friendly college towns sure to wow all family members.  A road trip from Santa Barbara to Berkeley is a fun way to explore the state’s central and northern regions.

Speaking of California, who says the golden state doesn’t have four seasons? They may be mild but they do exist. Fall is an excellent time to explore orchards in southern California.

Cool crisp air and red, gold and yellow leaves draped from trees just beckon for a road trip.  Now’s a perfect time to pack up the car and hit the road in search of good deals, farm fresh food and a visit to an orchard.  Show kids where apple juice and cider come from. A visit to an apple farm where your family can pick fruit and press cider is so much fun it won’t seem educational. But it is.

And here’s another place for good, old-fashioned cider. Michigan’s Dexter Cider Mill makes cider the same way it was made 120 years ago – by pressing the apples with an oak rack.

People like to visit Door County in Wisconsin to experience the peninsula’s four
seasons. Autumn brings cooler temperatures, and leaves change from green to
amber and golden hues. Farmers markets offer a bounty of pumpkins, apples and
other goods from local orchards. Los Angeles TravelingMom fell in love with
Door County on a recent visit to this Wisconsin region, named among America’s prettiest
small towns.

While fall road trips are ideal for enjoying colorful foliage, TravelingMom with Teens found a bounty of other attractions that appeal to kids of all ages.  To spice it up, two of her four recommended destinations offer alternative modes of transportation—bikes, boats and trains.

From Octoberfest to a Fall Foliage Festival, New Hampshire offers a cornucopia of free autumn events. Vegetarian TravelingMom plucked a few of her favorite places to share here.
