Families Can Enjoy LaughFest 2012 in Grand Rapids

by

LaughFestGRAre you ready for spring? Tired of these last few weeks of the winter doldrums (even in such a mild winter as this one has been for much of us)? Then get ready to laugh, because Gilda’s LaughFest in Grand Rapids, Michigan is on a mission to make you – and your kids – chuckle, guffaw, or just outright burst out laughing.

This year’s LaughFest will be held from March 8 through March 18, and events will be held at various locations throughout downtown Grand Rapids. A full schedule (and venue map) can be found on their website, but there is definitely something to appeal to everyone – whether you’re looking for stand-up comedy, humorous artwork, parties, dance, film, theatre and more.

As with last year’s inaugural event, there are a lot of options either specifically aimed at kids, or which are family-friendly with clean humor. Below are a few highlights that families should be sure to check out:

Baby Loves Disco – March 9 and 10, 10:30am and 2:30pm.

This fun dance party not only features real music (DJs blending classic disco from the 70’s and 80’s) but also gets the little ones moving with bubble machines, egg-shakers, scarves and more. There’s a chill-out room plus healthy snacks and diaper changing stations. What a fun way to get parents and kids moving and grooving together!

Super Saturday Kids Zone – March 10, 10:0am to 2:00pm and Saturday Night Teen Zone – March 10, 7:00 to 10:00 pm

During the day, come for kid-friendly activities, including laser tag, boulder dash, moon bounce, face painters, sand and spin art and more. Then bring your teens back in the evening to enjoy laser tag, a live DJ with dancing, a mechanical bull and more.

Family Improv Workshop – March 10 and 17, 11:00am

Gather your family and have a blast doing improv  together!

Don’t Let The Pigeon Fall Down Laughing – various dates and times at area libraries

Come hear stories, do fun crafts and activities, and enter a funniest caption writing contest. Prizes will be awarded to each library’s most amusing young author!

LaughFestGR-LaurieBerknerThe Laurie Berkner Band – March 11, 1:00pm

Definitely a kid favorite (and one of mine as well) – her music is fun and silly and speaks to the inner child in all of us!

Barrel of Monkeys: “That’s Weird, Grandma” – March 13, 10:00am and 1:00pm

A play written by Chicago school children and performed by an arts education theater ensemble who has worked with under-served children in the Chicago Public Schools since 1997.

Kids’ Joke Night – March 13, 6:00pm

A chance for kids aged 5th grade or younger to get up on stage and tell their best jokes!

People & Pets – March 17, 9:00am

Bring your pet for costume contests, games, entertainment, giveaways and treats!

Green Eggs & Ham – March 17, 10:15 and 11:30am

The classic Dr. Seuss story brought to life by the Grand Rapids Symphony. A great way to introduce music to kids aged 4-7.

Seriously Funny Adventure Challenge – March 17, noon

A fierce competition, pitting man against woman, child against parent, friend against friend, competitor against rubber chicken.  Teams of 2 or 4 compete in a unique challenge through downtown Grand Rapids.
