With the onset of cooler temperatures and changing colors, autumn is a beautiful time for a family vacation in the Lone Star State. Celebrate fall in Texas with festivals, foliage, fired foods and more.- Fall Foliage: Texas’ Piney Woods and Hill Country regions are perfect spots for viewing the changing colors of autumn, and there’s no better way to experience this than aboard a historic steam engine on the Texas State Railroad. Another can’t-miss stop is in Winnsboro, Texas, home of Autumn Trails, which takes place every weekend in October in celebration of the area’s beautiful colors.
- Harvest Happenings: The autumn season provides an endless list of festivals to enjoy throughout the state, including Dallas’ Autumn at the Arboretum with more than 40,000 decorative pumpkins and gourds; the Polish Harvest Festival in Houston; the Harvest Moon Regatta for those who enjoy the coast; and the Tyler Rose Festival with hundreds of thousands of displayed roses.
- Produce Picking: Gather the finest seasonal apples at Texas’ best orchards, including Apple Country Orchards in Idalou with 30 different varieties of apples from more than 6,000 apple trees; Love Creek Orchards in Medina; Morath Orchard in Wichita Falls; or Hutton Fruit Farm in Weatherford.
- Haunted Houses: Get spooked at some of the country’s best haunted attractions, including Houston’s ScreamWorld; Thrillvania, outside of Dallas; or the House of Torment in Austin.
- Fried Foods at the Fair: Mark your calendar for Sept.30 through Oct. 23 for the State Fair of Texas! Just a few examples that will leave you in fried food heaven: deep fried frozen margarita, fried lemonade, fried beer, fried Frito Pie, fried Oreos, and of course, fried butter.
- Fall Fashion – As the temperatures drop and your closets swap, check out Texas’ own top designer shops at NorthPark Center in Dallas or the Houston Galleria. If you’re budget shopping, check out great outlet malls in Allen, Conroe, San Marcos and Mercedes.
