Biloxi with Kids

Biloxi is not just a place to find casinos but it is also a great place to find family friendly activities!
lynn meadows_museumThe thought of Biloxi, located in the gulf coast of Mississippi, used to conjure up thoughts of ocean front casinos and not much else.  After a recent visit to Biloxi with my children, I would beg to differ now!  Biloxi offers lots of activities that are great for kids of all ages.

Take a ride on a real shrimp boat!  This was, by far, our favorite thing to do in Biloxi.  We loved it so much that we are planning a trip back over there to take another tour.  The Biloxi Shrimping Trip cruises around the smooth waters while dropping a sixteen foot trawl to pick up shrimp, fish and other sea life.  About 20 minutes into the 70 minute tour, they bring the trawl up and do an educational but fun lesson about what was caught.

Visit a children’s museum.  The Lynn Meadows Discovery Center is one of the biggest and most entertaining children’s museums that we have visited.  The kids would have played for hours if I had let them.  There are several levels of hands on exhibits.  Children can begin their visit by climbing up the Super Colossal Climbing Sculpture while you wander up the ramp.  Exhibits include Celebrate the World We Share-Mexico where visitors are introduced to a different culture through customs, languages, and costumes, the Mississippi City History Hotel where children can have tea and don a pretty hat, and then they can go shopping in the Winn-Dixie Morning Market.  There is also a pretend television studio, a crane, science activities and so much more.

See the Hurricane Katrina Memorial.  The memorial is a beautiful but sobering reminder of Hurricane Katrina.  Visitors can see a beautiful sculpture carved into a tree that was damaged by the hurricane as well as artifacts that were found or donated for the memorial.

Visit Beauvoir.  Beauvoir was the retirement home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. The beautiful home with a grand front porch sits facing the water.  In October, Beauvoir hosts the annual Fall Muster event where you can see living history presentations, re-enactments and demonstrations.
