The Grand Velas All Suites and Spa Resort could be a family vacation destination in itself. For some families, it was. I talked with several families from America who had been there five days or more and never left the grounds during their family holiday.
It’s easy to see why. The deluxe rooms of the Grand Velas provide exactly the kind of escape that you’ll never want to leave, offering gorgeous views of the beach or private pool areas for just you and yours.
The Grand Velas was recent voted Mexico’s Top All-Inclusive Resort. This resort is all about the details, from stunning door handles in the shops featuring the ever-popular iguanas to brushed cement and hand laid stones creating one-of-a kind patterns on the walkways. It’s classy and casual, elegant and understated, all rolled up into one heavenly retreat.
Something for Every Age Group
Some sections of the resort are set off for only those 12 and up, meant to offer privacy some adults adore, while other areas are a child’s dream land. The vanishing pools and aquatic sports toys are enough to convince most kids to beg mom and dad to make this the family vacation destination not just this year, but every year.
There’s a kid’s club they won’t want to leave (even the older kids are OK with hanging out in the “kids” club where there’s a Wii and they get to make their own piñatas and bracelets just like they can buy from the vendors on Playa del Carmen’s famed 5th Avenue). We didn’t have enough time to really take advantage of the kids’ club with all the various excursions that were scheduled, but other children we talked to said it was a blast, including teens who really liked being able to make the Mexican souvineers. The parts of the resort we did get to enjoy were impressive, to say the least.
Food at the Grand Velas
The food offers something for everyone, as well, with buffets lined with great options, from fresh fruit and fish to custom-made omelets at breakfast. You’ve ever wanted to get your child to sample something new to eat, this is the place to do it, with options from the molecular restaurant (the top cook here just placed 2nd in a competition with 500 chefs) to more typical but still scrumptious French, Asian, and Italian meals.
Fitness and Spa
Treat yourself to one of their decadent chocolate desserts delivered to your room, too. Then head to the well-equipped fitness centers where instructors are happy to hold a class anytime if you line it up in advance. Hurting after your workout? Get some special care from the spa. It’s world class, complete with water bubble beds, a special treat to help relax your tired bones. It’s always relaxing to me to float in the pool, but when you’re on a water bubble bed the bubbles suspend you above the bed and help relax aching muscles.
The grounds are gorgeous and could be their own botanical park. And the resort is environmentally-friendly, even allowing children to plant a tree of their own and documenting it with a certificate for posterity. Bicycles are available to ride around the facility, though a guide is helpful because the road in and out of the resort is just two lanes.
Security at the Grand Velas
The Grand Velas has hosted presidents (26 at once during a recent summit), so resort officials know quite a bit about security, as well as luxury. Even the front entrance feels a bit like a castle with massive curved walls and a wading pool resembling a moat with a front gate of wood with a peekaboo window to allow in only those with good reason to be at the resort.
Our only regret is we didn’t have enough time to relax and enjoy the resort because we were so busy checking out everything else the Riviera Maya region had to offer. We’re not complaining, just saying a trip back may be necessary at some point (you don’t have to twist my arm).
