10 Spring Break Vacation Recommendations

10 recommendations for great spring break family vacation destinations.
aquinnahTMOM Bloggers know it's tough to find the right spot for a spring break family vacation. Here are 10 suggestions.

Head to the Beach

Even at 45, I still think of college when I think of spring break -- nice warm beaches, only worry was tan lines and what we were going to do later that evening. Now I take spring break vacations with the kids, so I have to worry about finding kid friendly restaurants and if I have applied sun screen to everyone.

It's hard for me to imagine not going somewhere sunny.

Below are my top five spots for Spring Break:

1. Cocoa Beach/Cape Canaveral

2. Tybee Island/Savanna, GA

3. The Florida Keys

4. Washington, DC (think Cherry blossoms)

5. Negril, Jamaica (I would not bring my children to my favorite places!)

Mammoth Cave
, Ky.

Perhaps it says something about my family, but we love going underground. We’ve been to three types of caves–young ones, such as the Squire Boone Cavern (he was Daniel’s brother) in southern Indiana have rivers that still rage through them; middle-aged ones such as nearby Morengo Cave have water that still seeps and ancient caves such as Mammoth in Kentucky are completely dry, having long outlived the water that forged them.

Mammoth Cave is a wonder of nature and a fascinating place to take kids. It doesn’t matter what the weather is like above ground. Underground at Mammoth Cave, it’s always a steady 54 degrees Fahrenheit. The U.S. Parks Service operates the national park and runs several tours daily.

Washington D.C.

April is usually beautiful weather in Washington D.C. and spring is a much better time to visit D.C. than summer unless you're coming from the South so you're used to the heat and humidity. If you time it right, you can see the cherry blossoms in bloom, which are stunning. We visited the Air and Space Museum, the U.S. Treasury and the fairly new Spy museum. We even braced the National Zoo even though it was a bit cold. There were many kid-friendly restaurants such as  ESPN Zone--and my kids' favorite destination was a family friendly pizza place called Comet Ping Pong on Connecticut Ave in the Chevy Chase section. Yes, we ate pizza and afterward, we all went to the back and played ping pong!

Knott's Berry Farm for Toddlers

If you have toddlers, and you’re headed to Southern California, don’t forget Knott's Berry Farm.  Club Snoopy awaits – and you, too, can be a member.  This is an old school amusement park.  Feels very 1970s – in a good way.  There are no multi-level parking lots – in fact the parking lot is walking distance to the entrance.  No tram! The theme is very “Old West” meets Snoopy.  The rides are perfect for toddlers – my 3- and 5-year-olds went on everything.  And because it wasn’t crowded, they could go on many times in a row.  Be forewarned: the food is TERRIBLE!  Truly ghastly.   If you can swing it, bring your food in.  You’ll be glad you did.

Ski in Colorado, Without the Kids

Men and kids can ruin ski trips. Men tend to abandon you for long hours so they can go down scary Black Diamond runs, and kids take over the restaurant and entertainment choices. So I think a great spring break trip is to take a ski weekend with your girlfriends in beautiful, laid-back Summit County, Colorado. When you go with girls, the trip can include a reasonable amount of skiing, apres skiing (translation: drinking beer in the hot tub at 4 p.m.), shopping and spa treatments. Now, doesn't that sound like a spring "break"? The kids will be jealous, but once in a while, a traveling mom needs to travel without the kids.
