The Submarine Force Museum is located on the Thames River in Groton, Conn. (exit 86 off 95 north or south). Said to maintain the world's finest collection of submarine artifacts, the museum is the only submarine museum operated by the U.S. Navy; as such is the primary repository for artifacts, documents and photographs relating to U.S. Submarine Force history. The museum traces the development of the "Silent Service" from David Bushnell's Turtle, used in the Revolutionary War, to the Ohio and Virginia class submarines.
The museum's collections include more than 33,000 artifacts, 20,000 significant documents and 30,000 photographs. With so many holdings, the displays change frequently and a return visit will be a new experience. The 6,000 volume reference and research library is a world-renowned collection relative to the history of U.S. submarines and is open to anyone looking for information on submarines or submarine history.

Visitors Can "Go Below" in Submarine
A visit to this museum is a chance to go below in a submarine, see the control room, Mess, Torpedo room and more. It's hard to imagine living for months in cramped quarters such as these!

If you are lucky you may see a modern day sub coming into port or going out to sea. The US Navy base is next door. For security reasons, these transits are not announced or publicly scheduled so there is no way of knowing if you will see one or not.
