Continuing with the theme of architectural detail, Mexico provides countless opportunities to capture a story of the place in a single shot. San Miguel de Allende is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as being a mecca for artists from all over the world. Carved wood doors are characteristic of this part of Mexico, and I found that cropping just a portion, instead of photographing the entire door, serves not only to represent the place, but also makes the photograph a work of art in itself. Chinese New Year: Year of the Dragon

Chinese New Year: Year of the Dragon 2012, as symbolized in this tile screen at the Forbidden City in Beijing.
TMOM01.22.12CHINAdragon

The Chinese New Year begins this week on January 23rd.  In Chinese astrology, each year of a 12-year cycle is represented by a different animal, and 2012 brings the Year of the Dragon. The dragon is the only mythical animal of the Chinese zodiac, and is a symbol of strength, power, and good luck. Thus, a dragon year is a popular year to have babies! This photo is of one of the dragons found on the Nine-Dragon Screen at the Forbidden Palace in Beijing, marking the entrance to the residence of the Empress during the Ming Dynasty. Here again, choosing to zoom in and photograph a detail, rather than the entire wall, makes for a stronger photo, telling a story of China in one shot. Photo by Kymri Wilt of Miraterra Images

Peacocks of India

TMOM01.15.12INDIAMy first trip of 2012 will be a return to India, so I decided to share an image that would tell a story of India in a small detail. The peacock is the national bird of India, and it symbolizes qualities of pride, grace, and mysticism.  At Jaipur Palace in Rajasthan, I was intrigued by the colorful architectural details found throughout the palace and adorning the many gates and doorways, including the infamous Peacock Gate.  Zooming in for a close-up made for a more interesting photo than they typical shot of the entire gate, whose beauty, like India's, truly lies in the details. Nothing welcomes in the New Year better than a bouquet of roses!
KymriWilt TMOM 1.1.12 ECU CAY 0115

While New Year's Eve is symbolized with images of champagne and party hats, New Year's Day will always be roses for me.  Growing up, watching the Rose Parade in front of the tv in our pajamas was a family tradition, and I continue it with my own family today. Thus, I can't think of any better image than a bouquet of roses to start off the year! These beautiful roses were photographed right at the source, in the lush highlands of Ecuador, from where they are exported all over the world. Enjoy, and Happy New Year!
