Ladysmith Black Mambazo has married the intricate rhythms and harmonies of their native South African musical traditions to the sounds and sentiments of gospel music. Ladysmith live is always an amazing experience with a unique musical and spiritual alchemy that has touched a worldwide audience for more than four decades.
Assembled in the early 1960s, in Durban, South Africa, by Joseph Shabalala (still currently leading the group) – then a young farmboy turned factory worker. Joseph took the name Ladysmith Black Mambazo as Ladysmith was the name of Shabalala’s rural hometown.
The group's path had a specific direction when it formed. “To bring this gospel of loving one another all over the world,” Shabalala says. However, he’s quick to point out that the message is not specific to any one religious orientation.
“Without hearing the lyrics, this music gets into the blood, because it comes from the blood,” he says. “It evokes enthusiasm and excitement, regardless of what you follow spiritually.”
Chicagoland residents and visitors will enjoy seeing this group live on Friday, February 3, 2012 when it comes to the Old Town School of Folk Music’s Gary and Laura Maurer Concert Hall.
