Children in First Class?

Working TravelingMom
A business traveler finds herself in first class - not only with other corporate travelers, but families with kids in first class.

kids-in-the-planeOn my recent trip to the TravelingMom bloggers' retreat, I was surprised to find parents with children in the first class cabin on both my flight to and from Orlando. As a business traveler, I enjoy the perk of sometimes being upgraded to first, or business, class, where I usually expect to find other business travelers. But parents? With young kids? This was a surprise to me.

One of the kids was even young enough to be a lap child, who then spent the flight shuttling across the aisle from one parent's seat to the other.

Of course, a plane full of passengers en route to Orlando usually means a plane full of families. What's the difference between said families flying first class vs. coach? About $1,000, according to a recent search I did on Delta's website. While the cost likely prevents many families from flying first class, upgrades and mileage flights can put passengers into first class – with their kids.

As a mom myself, I don't know if I would bring my kids in first class with me. First class is, to me, a quiet respite from the chaos of the coach cabin and of traveling in general. It's a chance to sit back, relax, and truly enjoy the flight (not to mention an adult beverage or two). It's a place where you can sit, undisturbed, and work, or read, or knit, or just close your eyes and not have to worry about your seat back being kicked or the passenger in front of you reclining so far they're nearly in your lap. It's a place for grownups. Putting kids into the scenario seems like it would turn a quiet oasis into the grinding reality of life.

What do you think? Would you fly first class with your kids? Have you flown in first class with children there (yours or someone else's)?

I fly my kids business and it costs me fortunes but I just cannot take the arrogance of flying economy. You get abused waiting to drop your luggage to a company you just paid a ridiculous amount that probably someone else only paid half of for the same tickets. I am stunned consumers still take this abuse. Non flexible tickets. loosing your money when someone else wants to fly your ticket, having to beg for help when you travel with kids ( i can write a book on the horrors I have seen and lived traveling with a baby, from BA to virgin to KLM and delta, they have all left me without strollers, fighting for a babycot and first row seat despite my desperate 5 calls in advance of and after booking. Good tip: when you dont get what you booked you can decide to leave the plane and not go on the journey, show them you are not bluffing by mentioning you would like your luggage as well. how bad is it when you have to pull tricks like that being a frequent flyer....the flying business is sick.

My kids are older now (8 & 13) and so well behaved that I take them everywhere. They behave so well in very chic restaurants that complete strangers have told me that my two make them re-think their stance on not having children.

SO, with my own kids, if money were no issue, I would fly first class.

THAT said, I've yet to ride first class, because when I fly I always have them with me & the cost difference means we either stay home or we ride coach! :)

We have flown with our kids to Orlando first class. I don't see the difference. If the parents can afford it, more power to them making their kids more comfy.
