Do your kids get Veterans Day off of school? Mine used to. No more. I think it's wrong, but I don't set the school schedule. If you're lucky enough to have the day off from work and your kids are off school and you're so inclined, the government is offering several free ceremonies that let you teach your kids about the important work the men and women of the military do every day.
For example, if you're in Washington DC, you can attend the free wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. If you're going, go early. You'll have to go through a security screening station to get in and they stop letting people in once they reach capacity.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs also host a series of regional events. Check the list for an event in your area. Sadly, I see none listed in Illinois. That's shameful.
