So I'm on an airplane. Right now. Writing this. And posting it. All thanks to the free wifi on AirTran Airways. It claims to be the first carrier to outfit all of its planes with wifi. Others are quickly adding wifi, but this is my first time on a flight that offers it. And I never expected to get it for free.
I've never flown Air Tran before, but so far so good. The carrier flies out of Midway, so it's already a step ahead of O'Hare, which can be a real drag, especially around the holidays. And now that we're in the air, we get wifi. And it's free, at least for now. It appears the airline will charge for the service later. But I love it. For the first time, I'm sorry a flight will be only two hours.
Now if they would just add electrical outlets...
An addendum: Turns out it was a fluke that I got free wifi on the first leg of my flight from Chicago to Branson (the Midway-Atlanta leg). On the Atlanta-Branson, Missouri, leg, I was asked to pay for Internet on the flight. The cost was actually resonable: $4.95 for the duration of the flight, $12.95 for 24 hours, or $24.95 for a 30-day pass. Ironically, the service on the flight that charged was a little spotty and much slower than the Internet service on the free flight.
