The Octomom story is sad on so many levels. Sad for her. Sad for the children. Sad for the taxpayers. She seems to come up in conversations a lot lately, and here are some of the comments I've heard:"It'll be impossible for her to give attention to 14 children!""How is she ever going to pay for their diapers and formula?""How will they ever go on a family vacation?" OK, the last one was me. I realized what a ridiculous comment it was the moment it left my lips (oh, you're supposed to think before you speak?). This woman has got a lot more immediate worries than whether she and the kids should summer in the Hamptons or at Yosemite National Park. The question didn't come to mind because of the cost of taking 14 children on a family vacation. Who among us could afford that? I was thinking more of the logistics of traveling with 14 children. I mean, you'd have to travel by bus, right? And you'd need, like, four other adults or nannies to help? Would it be like a school field trip? How much space does 14 car seats take up? Think of the amount of toys needed to entertain everyone during a car (or bus) ride? Potty stops that take an hour and a half? The restaurant bill, even at McDonalds? ("Hi, I'd like 14 Happy Meals, please? The first one will be a cheeseburger with no onions and apple dippers, the second one will be ...") Perhaps some of you traveling moms have taken large groups of young children on vacation before. Maybe there's a way to keep things organized, keep costs down, and keep yourself sane (hey, didn't Jon & Kate Plus 8 do it once?). Maybe there's a system that can insure a good time is had by all?
