A week ago, on a trip home from New Moon with 6 tween girls, I had the pleasure of listening to 5 of them try to figure out EXACTLY HOW they would communicate with their friend who was off the next day on a two week family trip to India. Much to her friends’ chagrin, she would be traveling without her cell phone or her computer…such a sin in this day of perpetual communicativeness. The girls examined every which way for the friend to be able to hear from them: facebook posts, phone calls to the hotel, and mother’s cell phone.
I have to say that I was secretly smiling that the friend who was headed off to India had a deflection for every idea: “I don’t want so many alerts on my email when I get home”; “my mother won’t let me bring it;” and “I made it 11 years without knowing you and you knowing me, so I think we can make it for two weeks!” I had to laugh! But I was so touched by the tweens’ desire to stay in touch, across continents and time zones, and equally impressed with the traveling girl’s willingness to take a break. Maybe more adults should do the same?
