A week ago, on a trip home from New Moon with 6 tween girls, I had the pleasure of listening to 5 of them try to figure out EXACTLY HOW they would communicate with their friend who was off the next day on a two week family trip to India. Much to her friends’ chagrin, she would be traveling without her cell phone or her computer…such a sin in this day of perpetual communicativeness. The girls examined every which way for the friend to be able to hear from them: facebook posts, phone calls to the hotel, and mother’s cell phone.

I have to say that I was secretly smiling that the friend who was headed off to India had a deflection for every idea: “I don’t want so many alerts on my email when I get home”; “my mother won’t let me bring it;” and “I made it 11 years without knowing you and you knowing me, so I think we can make it for two weeks!” I had to laugh! But I was so touched by the tweens’ desire to stay in touch, across continents and time zones, and equally impressed with the traveling girl’s willingness to take a break. Maybe more adults should do the same?

To me, the most surprising part of this is the tween who was willing to go cold turkey without her phone. We took the kids to Mexico two weeks ago for a family wedding and I thought my 16-year-old would crumble into a fetal position when I told him I wasn’t going to pay the international rate for texting so he needed to leave his phone at home.
