A hotel is supposed to be your home away from home – what if you don’t feel safe there? I recently stayed in a hotel where I did not feel safe. Regrettably, I did not change rooms. Instead, I slept with one eye open, cell phone by my side, and waking up to every sound. If you’re staying in a hotel, there are some things you can do to make your stay safer: Avoid staying on the first floor or in any hotel room with an outdoor entrance, especially if it is far from the front desk or located in a remote part of the property; check your room for intruders when you enter – look under the bed and in the closet, and pull back the shower curtain; make sure all doors and windows are closed tightly and locked; and make sure you’re aware of your surroundings, including where the nearest fire exit is located.
If you find yourself in a place where you feel unsafe, ask to switch rooms. If they say no, ask to be switched to a different property owned by the same hotel – in mid-sized and large cities, most of the better-known hotel brands have several properties in different locations.
Have you found yourself in a hotel where you didn’t feel safe? What did you do about it? Please leave a comment.
