About: Once I became an expat I realized that travel was the missing component of who I am. It’s a part of me and I feel so lucky to be living this life. Although, I am even more grateful that my son can grow up being a multicultural, trilingual, international boy whose roots span over three different continents.
I’ve become an expert on Latin American living and traveling over the years. My other passion is being green, which for any developed nation is almost a norm these days, however, Latin America is way behind the times. So my blog covers practical ways to be green in not-so-green-friendly countries. You can read more about me at travelexperta.com.See Authors Posts (21) on June 14, 2009 @ 7:56 am

One of the most popular questions I get from my readers is where can I get good Costa Rican food?
The answer is a soda! No, it’s not a soda as in the kind you drink, but as in a local restaurant. Here you will be guaranteed to get a wholesome, homemade meal that will fill you up and make you very happy.
The most popular dish, ironically, is called Casado, which literally means ‘married man’. Back in the olden days men came home everyday for lunch. A huge meal awaited them, prepared by their wives. To this day men come home to eat for lunch. Since I can’t peak into their home lifestyles, I don’t know if this is the dish they are getting. However, local sodas still preserve this tradition.

Casados, rock. That’s really all there is to say about it:) The portions are staggering and filled with fresh ingredients. Even though the options are: Chicken, beef, fish or vegetarian, they all come the same sides:
- White Rice
- Beans
- Salad
- Plantains
- Potato Hash
- Tortilla
The going price is usually anywhere from $3 to $6 and some places even give you a fresh juice to go with it.
I know it’s super fun to go out and try worldly restaurants while on vacation. But I always say GO LOCAL you won’t regret it!
