Must we trade brunch dates and Bloody Mary’s for barely edible pancakes and sippy cups once we have kids? Hardly. New York Weekend Getaways: More Than the Big City

lake-georgeI'll admit that when I hear the words "New York" I think of the 12-mile island where I have had many memories of dance clubs, theaters, great dining, and bright lights. I'm one of those people who don't really recognize all five boroughs as New York City. But this past weekend, "New York" took on a new meaning.  Upstate New York offers a beautiful destination to staycation and unwind for a weekend getaway.

New York offers mountains and lakes that are absolutely breaktaking in just a few hours drive from New York City. Who knew? Last weekend I spent two days in Lake George, NY.  With wonderful outlet shopping, relaxing spas, and great dining, Lake George gave me a feeling I only get after a five-hour flight to the Caribbean or to the spas of Arizona.  If you are traveling with kids, there are plenty of family friendly activities like amusement parks, water parks, and miniature golf courses.

NY HorseNear to Lake George, summer brings horse racing from Belmont Park in Queens to the tranquil streets of Saratoga Springs. In addition to the Saratoga race track, there are numerous places to ride horses for all skill levels. I was so surprised that the things I usually go to Arizona or Northern California to see were within driving distance of New York City.

With reasonable hotel rates and a variety of experiences for the entire family to enjoy, upstate New York offers a great location for everything from a girls weekend getaway, romantic weekend or a family vacation with the kids. My suggestion is to stay in the Queensbury/Glenn Falls area between Saratoga Springs and Lake George. This will put in you prime location to enjoy all that the region has to offer.  If you are used to spending weekends in the city running to plays and concerts, the Adirondak region right up Interstate 87 will provide a pleasant surprise for a staycation.
